The club also features a playground with a commercial swing set and a climbing and slide feature. Members can reserve one of the three picnic pavilions for birthday parties, cookouts or celebrations, and gas grills are available. Both group and private swimming lessons are offered annually. A minimum of two professional lifeguards and one manager are on duty at all times; all employees are Red Cross certified in first aid, CPR, and AED. Picnic tables with umbrellas, chairs and chaise lounges provide comfortable seating for a few hours or all day.

Nansemond Swim Club

A Letter from the Nansemond Swim Club Board of Directors, emailed June 5, 2020

Dear Fellow NSC Members,

As you might know, the Governor of Virginia issued guidelines earlier this week for the Phase 2 State Reopening protocol. Like you, your NSC Board of Directors were hopeful that Phase 2 would allow us to open to normal operations for the season. We anticipated that Phase 2 would allow for NSC families to finally bring their children, grandchildren and guests to kick off the summer with a dip in our outdoor swimming pool.

Unfortunately, the Phase 2 guidelines impose serious restrictions on the number of swimmers and the types of activities allowed at outdoor aquatic facilities. After consulting with other area swim clubs and professional pool management companies, it’s clear that Nansemond Swim Club will not be able to open for business at this time, given the type of recreation expected by our membership.

Specifically, the guidelines state that:

• Indoor and outdoor swimming pools may be open for lap swimming, diving, exercise, and instruction only.

• Lap swimming must be limited to three persons per lane with ten feet of physical distance per swimmer.

• Diving areas must be limited to three persons per diving area with ten feet of physical distance per diver.

• Swimming and diving instruction and water exercise classes must be limited to allow all participants to maintain ten feet of physical distance at all times.

Under these restrictions, NSC would only be allowed to have 18 swimmers in the pool at any given time and those swimmers must be lap swimming and maintaining 10 feet apart at all times.

These restrictions put a heavy burden on the majority of our members. We have been advised that children are not allowed to simply play in the shallow water, enjoy jumping off the diving board, or use the playground equipment.

At this time and with current restrictions, we do not have the resources to maintain and staff the pool with so few members who would be able to use it at any given time.
Looking forward, we are hopeful that the pool will fully open for recreational swimming under Phase 3. Unfortunately, it is unclear when that will be.

Unlike corporately-owned pools or those managed by Homeowner Associations, we rely on our community of members to stay afloat. For those of you who have already mailed your dues payment, thank you. If you have not paid annual dues, please submit your $425 payment as soon as possible. Invoices were emailed in March and April. All late fees are being waived until 2 weeks after opening day. Please contact us if you have not received the emailed invoice: nansemondswimclub@gmail.com. Again, our goal is to balance the business and financial responsibilities of keeping Nansemond Swim Club operational into the future, while remaining flexible to member’s financial needs on a case by case basis.

NSC is poised to open for the season as soon as we are allowed by the Governor of Virginia. We look forward to announcing our official opening, once we receive official word from the state on when this can occur. Please feel free to reach out to us if there is anything we can help you with. We appreciate your continued patience as we all work through this unprecedented time together.
